Dustin's Story   — Roxanne Norris-Hicks, SC, USA

Dustin was supposed to be born April 11, 1993, but he decided to come 3 weeks early. My membranes ruptured on March 25th, but it was not a gush, just leaking. My husband was at work and would not be home until the next morning. He called the doctor and they immediately induced my labor. Dustin was born at 11:59pm, March 26th. They said he was healthy. It wasn't until the next morning that I was told he had a beta strep infection and pneumonia. He was only given a 70/30 chance of living. I was devastated because I was told I could not have children. So he was my miracle. Dustin stayed in the NICU for 2 weeks and was given double antibiotics. In that time he got jaundice so bad even the whites of his eyes were yellow. He had allergies to formula and his blood gasses ran real low. But on Easter Sunday, 1993, I got to take my baby home. He attends public school where he is a sophomore. He does have ADD and a slight learning disability. One class out of his schedule is special ed. Other then that he is a normal 16 1/2 year old. He is on the wrestling team at school, loves playing the guitar, and loves music. He is trying to start his own band. I thank God for letting him live and choosing me to be his mother.
