Maxine's Baby's Story   — maxine wood, barnsley/south yorkshire, united kingdom

At 38 weeks my water broke at 3am on the 15th of August, 2004. By 7:30am on the 17th of August nothing else had really happened. My husband and I were eating breakfast on the ward. I went to the toilet and noticed that my baby had passed meconium so I informed them. I was taken to the labour suite to be put on a drip. Not long after having the drip set up my baby was so distressed that they rushed me to theatre to have an emergency c-section. Once we were back on the ward my son was placed on the bed with me while I was still drowsy. It was not long after that I noticed he was a funny colour and didn't seem right. I managed to get my husband's attention who then notified them. Our our son was then rushed up to special care. At first they didn't know what was wrong with him. They found out he had low blood sugar and he needed oxygen. When they found out what was wrong they put him on antibiotics for a week. When he came home he we fine, but still slow to feed. As soon as he started feeding he would drop off to sleep and ended up back in for observation for two days at six weeks. Since then he has been fine.
