Devin's Story   — cheri allen, NC, USA

One day after Devin was born, I was told to take tons of pictures, and say good-bye as he would not survive the night. He did. My 'water' broke, but I wasn't in labor. More than 24 hours later, labor was induced. Devin developed Strep B meningitis. He received a shunt at age 2 1/2 and then one revision at age 3. He has some learning disabilities including short term memory loss and poor comprehension. He is 14 years old now, and the most loving person I know. It is difficult to see him struggle with everyday tasks. Somedays at school, he will go out of class to his locker and when he returns, he has forgotten where his desk is. He cannot work a combination lock, so he has a key-entry lock instead. I had home schooled for a while, but he wanted to be around other kids more, so I put him back in the public school system. I think all the time, if only-maybe if I had gotten to the hospital sooner, if I had known about group B strep, if I had insisted on antibiotics. God made Devin this way for a reason. He is kind, gentle, smart, loving, and patient. I would not have him any other way!!!!!
